This BBC report does not surprise me at all.
Shooting an individual animal sure harms the individual but it does not follow that it harms the general population. If shooting is a commercially viable way of making the existence of the species financially useful then it should be considered. The aim of conservation should be to maintain species as a whole, viable population, not to get over focused on the fate of individuals.
