Why are people so surprised and shocked?

I guess that as long as people can ignore the fact that sparrowhawks eat birds (why else are they called sparrowhawks) they will be suprised and shocked when they see a sparrowhawk kill and eat a bird.

The fact that the bird was a rare visitor to these shores and that lots of people saw this kill does not make it any different the to many many bird kills made by birds of prey every day.

On several occasions I've see our local sparrowhawks take collared doves. Birds of prey eat birds (and other things too) and the number of birds of prey will affect the overall bird population. Two words - Langholm Moor.
