About that 3rd row of seats in your car.

Is that 3rd row of seats where the crumple zone used to be?

I'm sure I've read about crumple zones at the front and back of cars which collapse
on impact, absorb energy and protect the passengers in the rigid safety cell.

What happens to the occupants of the 3rd row when a car gets rear ended? Are their seats in the rigid safety cell or the real crumple zone?

Perhaps EuroNCAP should have a rear end test where a vehicle is hit from behind by a deformable structure. After all, lots of cars do get rear ended. Looking at the EuroNCAP web site I see they do front and side tests. The rig that's used for side tests could be used for a rear test.

I guess that with no rear test, a 3rd row of seats placed in the rear crumple zone won't lose any points in a test that is not carried out.
