It's entirely possible for this to lead a species into an evolutionary dead end or to take over the world.
When pandas branched off from bears there good reasons for them to start changing diet. At the every least there were no major disadvantages.
Times have changed and now eating a bulky, low energy value food in a landscape being increasingly managed humans no longer looks like a good option. Unfortunately, for pandas they're probably up a dead end.
