Having written that I doubt that the iTunes Store would be shutdown I now read reports that the iTunes Store might be shutdown!
I suspect that Apple are playing hard ball in their negotiations over royalty payments. Take what you get or have more of nothing.
Could iTunes survive with out the iTunes store? I think it could. Would Apple shutdown the DRM key servers? I doubt it.
iTunes is what sells iPods. iTunes makes it very easy to rip CDs and either play them though iTunes or download them to an iPod. I bought an iPod (actually the Shuffle was a present) because I like iTunes as a program to listen to my CDs on my PC and around the house. I've yet to make a purchase from the iTunes store.
If there was no iTunes store would anyone else be able to come up with a system to replace it? I guess the big record labels would like to try. However their past efforts don't inspire confidence. The labels are too concerned about control and the result is that the user experience is grim so the labels get lots of control over nothing.
I expect Microsoft would also like a shot. They have been very successful with Microsoft Windows. One of the key reasons for the success of Windows has been the opportunities around Microsoft Windows that has made lots of players rich. Everyone helps to make the cake bigger so even a small share is valuable.
As ever, time will tell...
