Here's an interesting article on www.thedailygreen.com about grass feed beef.
In short, it's better for you and the environment that beef fattened in feed lots.
Without doubt the best beef comes from beef breeds (Hereford and Aberdeen Angus come to mind) that are raised on grass. It's what these breeds have been bred for.
The high milk producing breeds (Friesian (aka Holstein) come to mind) have been breed to produce milk rather than meat.
Grass feed cattle produce tastier meat and milk and are less damaging to the environment that animal feed manufactured feeds. In particular the high protien feeds used to fatten dairy cattle to produce beef.
Sheep are another good example of a low impact meat source when reared on land that's not much use for anything else. Hilly country in particular which can't be used for arable crops can have sheep on them.
We do eat too much meat in the west and do so at considerable expense to the environment, the animals and ourselves.
I'm for eating less, better quality meat.
