Protecting the Vegan (and everyone else's) Crops

This article got me wondering about the practicalities of growing food crops for vegans and everyone else for that matter.

Leaving aside the morality of eating animals, what about the morality of displaying wild animals and eco-systems so we can grow our food crops? Having lived on an arable farm and spent a lot of time shooting rabbits, pigeons and geese to protect food crops I do wonder if it's possible to 'farm vegan'.
