Deep Irony

Novell is selling some patents to CPTN (owned by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and EMC) as part of the process by which it is taken over by Attachmate.

However, the US government seems to have decided that this would give Microsoft and others some sort of monopolistic power and so they have to sell the patents on to Attachmate after giving themselves a license to use the patents.

I though that patents were an artificial monopoly designed to encourage innovation. Perhaps there's been too much monopoly and too little innovation.

Groklaw has more.
