The 1950s seems very early for doctors to be talking about bonding

In an interesting article about the actress Claire Danes playing Temple Grandin I read this:

Grandin grew up in the 1950s, when doctors still put autism down to a "lack of bonding" with the mother.

I'd be interested to know where the "lack of bonding" quote comes from as the 1950s seem very early for doctors to be talking about bonding.
