School summer holidays, holiday costs and unintended consequences.

The BBC news is running an article stating that the National Association of Head Teachers is expected to call for an end to the six-week summer holidays.

"The NAHT leader Russell Hobby said the move could reduce teacher exhaustion and might cut the cost of family holidays."

Could? Might? Is that good enough evidence to make a change or pandering to current topical news items. In particular, long working hours for teachers and extra high holiday charges for summer holidays.

Without a peak season for which lots of expensive holidays are made available and sold would the total amount of holiday accommodation drop? With a lower peak of simultaneous holidays will the number available drop? Reduced peak demand could lead to reduced peak supply allowing prices to stay high.

How long will the summer holidays be? If it's two weeks then everyone in the office with school children will want to take the same two weeks off. That's going to make staffing and holiday cover interesting for small businesses.

If the holidays are staggered by region, which region gets the last two weeks of July rather than the last two weeks of August.

If the holidays are two weeks then is there time to go to Disneyland Florida and deliver jet lagged children back to school on Monday?
