So the HS2 won't go to Scotland or link up with HS1 according to this Independent article. So stupid.
Now, I'm not a big fan of HS2. It's a grandiose project, very expensive and I'm sure the money could be better spent putting in additional normal speed tracks. We don't want to move around a few rich people at great expense, we want to move lots of people cheaply. Also, high speed is not fuel efficient so more greenhouse emissions there. I'm also not convinced that HS2 will move business north, it's just as likely to move business south.
If you are going to make a massive investment in HS2 it seems really stupid to not connect directly to HS1 or Glasgow & Edinburgh.
Transport is meant to be joined up so not connecting HS2 to HS1, the Chunnel and Europe is stupid. Travellers from the north of the UK might well choose to fly to Europe given the hassle of changing from HS1 at Euston to HS1 at St Pancras. After getting off HS2 at Euston travellers will have to take the Piccadilly link to Kings Cross and then walk through the underground connection to St Pancras and get on another train. Multiple tickets, Oyster cards, grief and hassle that could all be avoided.
Similar problems in the north as HS2 stops well short of Scotland. If we want to be a Union (something I support) let's join up.
Infrastructure is supposed to be long term.
If we're going to build HS2 at least do it properly.
