As the father of a three year old I've done my time teaching 'sharing'.
The accepted protocol seems to be that if child A is playing with a toy that child B wants then child A is told to share and child B gets the toy. What's the difference between this and mugging? I want your wallet and expect you to 'share' it with me...
We've taken a slightly different tack with our child. It firstly depends on the ownership of the toy. If the toy belongs to child A then child A does not have to give up the toy. We suggest and encourage taking turns or lending but go no further. If the toy is owned by the 'facility' (e.g. play centre, nursery, swings in the park etc.) then we encourage turn taking. If child A has had the toy for a while and either is or will be in danger of hogging it then we enforce sharing and turn taking.
Once a child understand mine and yours then I think they're ready for this.
