I've been watching the BBC series 'The Men Who Made Us Fat'.
The first thing to understand is that you don't go on a diet, you are ALWAYS on a diet and can only change your diet.
If you are fat, then you're eating too much and need to eat less permanently. There's no need for fad diets you just need to eat less.
Exercise is good for fitness but not for weight loss. An interesting point made in the BBC series is that thin people can be unfit and that fat people can be fitter than you might think. We seem to use thinness as a sign of fitness which is not necessarily the case.
The Channel 4 series 'Secret Eaters' shows just how badly some people judge what they're actually eating. For the vast majority of people, if you're overweight you're eating too much.
We were a little overweight with BMIs (a useful guide) just above the recommended range and so we have changed our diet permanently. The main change we've made is to cut out the 'gratuitous' carbs. We eat less processed and/or high GI carbs. Fewer or no chips, steak and a big salad without chips. Less pasta and bread. Less wine/beer with meals and usually none Monday to Thursday. If we've had a properly physically active day then we'll have extra carbs. We've reduced our portion sizes (smaller plates and glasses) and for the past few years have maintained our weight and BMIs where we want them. I'm sometimes a bit peckish during the day so have an apple or a banana. I even have a fruit bowl on my desk at work!
